How the NDIS funds SIL

Core · Assistance with daily life · Supported independent living

The NDIA says your SIL funding depends on your disability support needs. You may share a support worker or have an individual support worker, depending on how much help you need. SIL can’t be used for rent or other day-to-day expenses like groceries.

SIL is different from Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA): SDA is the housing itself, and SIL is funding for the support workers who help you. Some people have both. Read the NDIA’s SIL page.

06Questions

Good questions, honest answers.

What is the difference between SIL and SDA?

The NDIA says SDA is the housing itself, homes built for people with very high support needs, while SIL is funding for support workers to help you. Some people have both in their plans.

Does SIL pay my rent?

No. The NDIA says SIL can’t be used for rent or other day-to-day expenses like groceries.

Do SIL providers have to be registered?

Yes. The NDIA says all providers delivering SIL must be registered from 1 July 2026, and providers had until 1 October 2026 to apply to register.

How do I get SIL in my plan?

The NDIA looks at your disability support needs and your home and living situation. There may be other home and living supports that suit you better, for example if you live alone or with people who aren’t NDIS participants. We can help you understand your options.

Can I choose who I live with?

We talk with you about your preferences for housemates and do our best to find a household that suits you.

Where do you provide SIL?

We support participants across Sydney and New South Wales.

A home that works for you.
